CLS is a partner of the European project H2020 “EO4wildlife – Platform for wildlife monitoring integrating Copernicus and ARGOS data”, which started in January 2016. This European project, funded by the Horizon 2020 program of the European Commission for a total duration of 36 months, brings together 7 partners from France, Spain and the United Kingdom.
The aim of this project is to develop a web platform for the scientific community (biologists, ornithologists,…) and MPA managers around the world that will provide easy access to satellite data on the marine environment (temperature, currents, bathymetry, chlorophyll concentration, etc.) obtained through the European Copernicus Earth Observation Program. This will allow the scientists to cross-correlate to georeferenced data (ARGOS data, telemetry and earth observations) on marine species.
This platform will make it possible to perform habitat modelling on marine species, to analyze the relevance of MPA networks, to implement management measures, etc.
To achieve this goal, an international team of experts is working on the management, processing, fusion and analysis of large volumes of data to study the behavior of large marine species in relation to environmental conditions.
This in order to better know and foresee:
- The spatial distribution of seabirds
- Migrations and habitats of pelagic fish
- The behavior of sea turtles
- The distribution and abundance of marine mammals
